ur partnership with the newly established Undocumented Resource Center at Pasadena City College was a transformative creative endeavor, as it aimed to bring forth a powerful and inspiring artwork that would occupy a central place in the physical space of the center. The objective was to craft a three-piece art installation that not only adorned the walls but also carried a profound message of empowerment, unity, and the celebration of undocumented students.

The conceptualization of this artwork was born from a desire to capture the essence of empowerment and resilience within the undocumented community. The focal point of the artwork was a representation of a group of diverse undocumented students, walking with confidence through a vibrant field of flowers. This imagery was carefully chosen to symbolize growth, transformation, and the blossoming of potential and opportunities.

The choice of a field of flowers was not arbitrary; it held deep significance. These fields are known to frequent monarch butterflies, which are a poignant symbol within the undocumented community. The monarch butterfly’s journey, with its transformation from caterpillar to free-flying creature, is often seen as a metaphor for the experiences of individuals within the undocumented community as they seek self-discovery, transformation, and freedom. This symbolism further solidified the artwork’s message of hope, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the undocumented community.

Integral to the art piece were the monarch butterflies themselves, captured in flight around the scene. These butterflies not only added an element of beauty and grace to the composition but also served as a poignant symbol of the strength and endurance of the undocumented community.

At the forefront of the artwork were the words “Dreamer,” “Leader,” and “Achiever,” powerful terms that embody the aspirations and potential of undocumented students. These words were chosen to serve as a source of motivation, encouragement, and recognition for the individuals who would engage with the artwork, reinforcing their sense of identity and purpose.
