Queer Coins

Project information

O

ur collaboration with our client culminated in the development of a unique and symbolic two-piece collection that we affectionately referred to as “Queer Coins.” This project was conceived as a homage to the legacy and contributions of prominent queer historical figures and was a celebration of their impact on the LGBTQ+ community. Central to this creative endeavor was the partnership with @queerportraits, a talented artist who adeptly brought to life cartoon versions of these iconic figures. The primary focus of the collection was dedicated to commemorating the indomitable spirits of Marsha P. Johnson and Silvia Rivera, two pivotal figures in the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

The design of these coins was meticulously conceptualized and crafted to capture the essence of these legendary figures. Marsha P. Johnson and Silvia Rivera, recognized for their significant roles in the Stonewall Uprising and their lifelong advocacy for transgender and LGBTQ+ rights, were featured prominently on the coins. The decision to utilize a metallic coin design was intended to evoke a sense of timeless significance, emphasizing the lasting impact of these figures on the LGBTQ+ community and their enduring influence.

The innovative dimension of this project was the conversion of these coin designs into tangible currency. Laser cutting technology was employed to bring these artistic creations to life, ensuring precision and durability in the production process. These coins, which served as a form of currency, were purposefully integrated into a program offered by our client on campus. This not only added a unique and memorable dimension to the program but also fostered a sense of connection to the figures represented on the coins, creating a deeper understanding and appreciation of their contributions.
